MY PROFESSIONAL JOURNEY
Right out of college in the early 90’s, I took a challenging and rewarding opportunity to set up all regional office hardware and software for a Fortune 500 company. While I had taken programming courses in high school and college, this was my first real-world, technology experience. This role intrigued me to learn more and further sharpen my technical skills. I then pursued another degree with a concentration in programming. While building websites in this program, I met my future manager for a technology start-up. This role was an even more impactful experience. I had the opportunity to work with high-profile retailers, publishers and associations, including Martha Stewart Living, Reba McIntire, Sky & Telescope, the Arthritis Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, Ulla Popken, along with many others. This was my first full-time Project Manager role, with just enough hands on technical work where I could maintain my technical skills, while honing in on my business acumen.

With a natural curiosity and desire to further my knowledge, I completed an undergrad and graduate program while working full-time. With considerable private sector experience, I then balanced out this experience with public sector work leading technology programs supporting disaster survivors for the Department of Homeland Security. Enjoying fast-paced private business, I accepted a role for a major security company to lead their software development efforts with high profile clients such as Lowe’s, Tiffany and Company, TJMaxx, CVS, Michael’s and many others. Twenty five years later, I connected with my current employer. The mission of American Public Education Incorporated is strong and rewarding.

In multiple organizations, I have been the first Project Manager responsible for establishing the discipline and institutionalizing standards. I started writing and publishing my insight in project management journals (Cutter Consortium, Project Connections, Projects at Work, PM Boulevard and PM Hut) over 15 years ago. Helping others and organizations succeed has been an increasing focus for me.

In order to ensure I am providing the best consultation to my colleagues and organizations, I keep current through numerous certifications, including the PMP, CSM, DASM, Lean, SAFe and many others.

I am thankful for the opportunities presented and the choices made in my career. These choices led me to not only numerous learning experiences, but to some amazing people that I have remained in contact with nearly three decades later.

My hope is to provide my blog audience with practical tips to help you each in your pursuit of excellence.
